By 1956 Betty Parsons, who had opened a new gallery space at 15 East 57th Street only four years earlier, is already known for representing new contemporary American artists. Kelly is introduced to Betty Parsons by art dealer David Herbert who works for gallerist Sidney Janis. In early 1955 Parsons visits Kelly’s studio in lower Manhattan on Broad Street near Wall Street and offers Kelly his first solo exhibition in the United States. Kelly selects thirty abstract paintings and reliefs for his New York debut, including Colors for a Large Wall and White Plaque: Bridge Arch and Reflection.
Ellsworth Kelly, paintings 1951-1956 at Betty Parsons Gallery opens May 21 through June 9.
