Matthew Marks Gallery presents a solo exhibition featuring Ellsworth Kelly’s monumental painting Color Panels for a Large Wall II from 1978.
In 1978, the Central Trust Company, Cincinnati, commissioned Kelly to create a work for the interior of their new building designed by architect Richard Keating of Skidmore Owings and Merrill. Kelly painted eighteen canvases in different hues and arranged them in two horizontal rows of nine pairs. The work titled Color Panels for a Large Wall was installed in the bank’s main lobby and measured 10 feet tall by 125 feet wide; meanwhile, Kelly made a smaller-scale version, Color Panels for a Large Wall II, kept for his own collection.
Color Panels for a Large Wall II, a realization of Kelly’s career-long exploration of the grid, is presented publicly for the first time at Matthew Marks’s Chelsea gallery, accompanied by a selection of related paintings, sculpture, collages, photographs, and lithographs.
A fully illustrated catalogue published by Matthew Marks Gallery accompanies the exhibition, with color plates of related works in museum collections, preparatory drawings and studies for Color Panels, and archival photographs.[More Information]
